Willow Cuttings

Planting willow cuttings is an easy process with very high success rates.
Cuttings are used to grow willow, as it is ensures the willow stays true to the parent.
The best time to plant willow cutting is between December and April .
Willow cuttings are naturally rich in rooting hormones which promote quick growth of roots .
Ideally Willow cuttings should be freshly cut and green - to check the freshness, cut off a tiny part off one end and the inside should be green and wet .
The cutting should be thicker than a pencil, any thinner and they are prone to drying out .
The best cuttings are from 1 years growth but 2years growth will also take.
When planting willow cuttings, simply make a pilot hole with a metal rod and pushing the willow cutting into the hole .
For a 12 inch willow cuttings ; 9 inches are below the ground and 3 inched above .With  2 ft cuttings, sink 12 inches below the ground and the remainder above , 6ft rods sink 15inches below.
As soon as the ground warms up up on early spring, fine white roots develop within days and rapidly form a network of roots which occupy the top few inches of  the soil.
Willow cuttings can be kept fresh for a few weeks by placing  them in a fridge ( not freezer)
