Willow for Wildlife & Environmental Management Product Categories
Willow is commonly grown on wasteland to reclaim brown field sites and to grow on old landfill sites . It is frequently used to take up heavy metals deposits on contaminated land.
Growing willow is very good for taking up nitrogen and is ideal for tackling nitrate pollution in Nitrate Sensitive Areas or Nitrate Vulnerable Zones. Willow can also be planted along lower field margins and riparian zones to act as a buffer for retaining diffused pollutants draining from adjacent agricultural land. Willow can however, thrive in soils which have low nitrogen levels. Growing willow for Biomass has been shown to be effective in removing cadmium buildup on arable land caused by the long term use of application of fertilizers.
Red Salix and the viminalis can be used for stabilising river banks, rods are driven into the ground at the bank edge and the fine vigorous root system of the willow secure the ground in place. In a similar way, willow can be grown to stabilise ground on hillsides.
The habitat created by a willow plantation is very different to those found within a conventional agricultural crop . Willow supports a large number of insect species most of which cause little damage to the willow . Many songbirds species are attracted to willow plantations . Some migrant warblers species that are becoming less common are also attracted. In areas where you aren't going to attempt weed control we suggest using 3 foot cuttings. Willow is ideal for establishing game cover in one season, pheasants were breeding in our willow beds within 3 months of planting them.
